Today I had a wonderful day.
Lot of singing, writing, walking, thinking . . . . . all about music . . . .
I happened to make a new acquaintance on orkut, who is now a friend of mine, called Prashant. After a few scraps he came online and we literally chatted for hours regarding aesthetic sense in cinema and the value of art in general. We just met today online and chatted for hours as if we knew each other since ages. That is the magic of art and artists.
We don’t need any introduction and formalities; we just end up meeting each other and discussing things that we are passionate about. And there is no enough time to talk about art. It is magnificent and wonderful that you have so much to speak about and discuss.
What we discussed could be mainly classified into follows
1. Sense in cinema
2. Art in cinema
3. Value in cinema
Well, after that talk I had to sit for a while and think about the real beauty of some films that changed my understanding of cinema for ever and the way I look at cinema and all that. So here comes the list

Charulata : A sensitive portrayal of human emotions by Satyajit Ray and one of his best works. The lonely lady Charulata is attracted to her Husbands brother who is young and energetic. The way in which subtle camera angles are used and the physical and psychological tension that the characters undergo are portrayed with a much underplayed manner.
White / Blanc: a wonderful film by the genius of Keislowski. A simple man is betrayed by his wife who is an adulteress and flirt. He is simply shattered into pieces by this incident and he gets back at her in a brilliant screenplay and narration. There is no frame in the film that is not white. The last scene where he looks at his wife with tears in his eyes through the binoculars, as she lays in a jail cell is awesome and very deep.
Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa: The best work of the master mind Japanese film maker. A aristocratic lady is sexually assaulted and her husband killed in a jungle. The court is listening to the hearing of the witnesses. And different people give different versions of the story. How a situation gets different perspectives is very beautifully picturised and what compositions??
Monsoon Wedding: Mira Nair’s best work. A subtle comical presentation of Indian high middle class and the undertones of westernization. A very wonderful way of presenting the issue of child abuse. And amazing performances by Lelite Dubey, Nasaruddin Shah and Shifali Chaya
Kannattil Mutamittal : amazing script, sound track, power packed performances and burning issues. Close to being a perfect film.
Elling: most comical and yet most sensitive film to be ever made.
Pianist: Touching and heartening story of a Polish Pianist who is lost in his music amidst attack by Nazis and close to death encounters. Only one artist can understand and portray another artist like that. By none other than polanski himself.
Chandani Bar: brutal reality and wonderful camera shots with outstanding performance by Tabu
Rent: How to measure a year in a man’s life? With love? Well watch this amazing musical to find out
Last Supper: the psychologically blunt story of a daughter’s revenge against her mother for loving the guy that she loved!!!! Crazy yet magnificent!
Last but not the least my favorite film of all times
MR and MRS IYER by Aparna Sen. The most beautiful film, shot beautifully, written beautifully, amazing performances, and for me the most romantic movie to be ever made!!
